Model 1937 Belgian army motorcycle helmet

03-11-2021

With the modernization of the Belgian army in 1935-36, also came the first motorcycle helmet. This model 37 or better know as a Cromwell will serve in the Belgian army until the better-known model 1938 came to the stage. Both models will be used by the army until the start of the Second World War.

This piece is one from my personal collection and is a peculiar example. Everything links it to a military, instead of a civilian piece. The helmet consists of a vulcanized material with leather webbing, Leopold III Air Force badge on the front of the piece and the name "Pierrard" with an illegible serial number on the inside. This could indicate that the helmet was part of Air Force unit. The remains of a white band that goes around the helmet is also partially present, this suggests that it was used on military exercises.
